The fourth episode of the fourth series of Top Gear aired on the 30th of May, 2004. It was presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig. Snooker ace Ronnie O'Sullivan was the guest star. It was the 33rd episode overall.

Synopsis[]

Jeremy presents the then-new Audi A8, which has a twin-turbocharged V8 diesel engine. It does 0-60 in 6 seconds, which is brilliant, but surely, Jeremy asks, the whole point of a diesel engine is fuel economy? He posits himself on whether the task of driving to Edinburgh from London on a single tank is possible. After asking an initially somewhat skeptical audience their thoughts, he then raises the stakes by asking them if it were possible to then drive back to London on that same tank. Richard weighs up Jeremy's proposition, considering the drive would be 800 miles on a single tank, in a completely unmodified A8, and comes to the conclusion that it's a 'stupid' idea.

Tonight...[]

  • Some big challenges; Can you play darts with cars?
  • Which is faster, a Ford or a pigeon?
  • And can this new Porsche break the lap record on our track?

Airing History[]

It was then cut into a series of compilations known as "The Best of Top Gear", before indefinitely ending up as a permanent fixture on Dave from the channel's 2007 debut onwards, albeit in a cut 45-minute version. It would later appear on streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and IPlayer.

Episode Names[]

Though never given a name upon its original airing, much like every other episode of Top Gear, a name was retrospectively applied to the episode by the BBC years later; Top Gear's own website calls it "The one with car darts".
