The nineteenth series of the BBC motoring show Top Gear, starring presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, premiered on the 27th of January, 2013, and concluded with the two-part Africa Special on the 10th of March, 2013. It featured five regular episodes in addition to the aforementioned special.

Viewing figures had risen back to 6.58 million people on average in spite of the show's 10 month absence from television, but was still close to a million away from the show's peak days. The series' two closing episodes which formed the Africa Special would both break 7 million views, the first episodes to do so since Series 17, Episode 4. It would be these episodes which would become the show's joint fifth-highest rated episodes overall, with a 9.0/10 on IMDb.

As its near year-long hiatus and seemingly dwindling interest from the previous series were not enough to send the show into a downward spiral, the show was easily renewed for a twentieth series, which began airing in June 2013, a mere three months following this finale.

Controversy[]

After the Burma Special incident in 2014, an examination of his Toyota GT86 review, heard Jeremy mumbling the N-word. The Daily Mirror revealed video evidence that in his reviews, in which he had used the rhyme eeny meeny miny moe for choosing the cars, he mumbled the word on the first few runs before replacing it with the word teacher. In his apology, Jeremy stated that he was "extremely keen" to avoid using the word, and that he had to do three takes with the film, adding that he was "mortified" that he appeared to actually mumble the word and that he did everything he could to avoid it being transmitted on the show.
